Nuclear Particle Astrophysics (NPA) Seminar: Philip Ilten, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “Probing QCD with Heavy Flavor Jets”

The LHCb detector on the Large Hadron Collider was purpose built for B-physics, but has proven to be a versatile forward detector. Recently a jet physics program has been developed at LHCb, leveraging these forward capabilities. The unique decay signatures of hadrons containing heavy quarks provide an important experimental tool for understanding QCD phenomena including intrinsic charm, strange asymmetries, the gluon parton distribution function, and more. I will describe the inclusive c and b-jet tagging capabilities of LHCb and their application. Additionally, I will describe recent work on understanding the nature of J/psi production in the context of jets.
